Improving Requirements Specification using EARS

Requirements Specification is the important part of the Requirements Engineering. Most of us learn on the job and do not get formal trainings on how to best specify requirements.

Natural language is the most common form for requirements engineering. Untrained developers or business analysts using natural language for specifying requirements may lead to various issues. Requirements tend to be Incomplete, Incorrect, Vague, Untestable, etc.

Poor requirements invariably result in poor development and quality of the system or product.

On the other hand it is not feasible to certify every engineer in requirements engineering methods.

What would help us is adopting simple methods which could improve the quality of requirements. EARS - Easy Approach to Requirement Syntax is an approach employed by many organizations to successfully improve their requirements.

In this presentation, I have tried to introduce few steps to improve requirements specification. The EARS concept and application is also discussed with examples.

As always, reach out to me if you have any questions. Happy Engineering.
